Carol Brosseth Sheffer Leadership Scholarship

Carol Brosseth was a 1959 graduate of Winona State who earned a B. S. Degree in education with a major in English and a minor in business. After graduation she taught English one year at Waseca, MN, High School, worked in editing four years for the Minnesota Education Association in St. Paul, and taught 29 years in Bloomington, MN, first at Lincoln Senior High, then at Jefferson Senior High. During these years she held many leadership positions including English Department chair at high schools, district curriculum and instruction council representative from both schools as well as council chair. In the community she was active in
politics and chaired a district convention. She served a 3-year appointment on the Bloomington Charter Commission and chaired it one year. She was the first Bloomington classroom teacher to participate in Leadership Bloomington, a program of the Bloomington Chamber of Commerce. She was active in the Bloomington Education Association where she edited the newsletter, served as president of the Association and on the negotiating team. She also served on MEA division committees and was a delegate to the NEA convention. She was a speaker at meetings of the Minnesota and National Councils of Teachers of English, and the Minnesota and National Councils for Gifted and Talented Education. She received a fellowship for study at the University of Minnesota from the Newspaper Fund and a fellowship from the National Endowment for the Humanities for study at Southern Oregon University, Ashland Shakespeare Festival. She received a sabbatical from the Bloomington Schools for study at Hamline University where she earned her Master of Arts in Liberal Studies.

“Even though I received a good education at Winona State in the academic areas I studied, I believe that the biggest benefit of my WSU years was the opportunities I had to participate in and lead campus activities. I was an officer of Future Teachers of America, an officer in the Lutheran Student Association 3 years, active on the Homecoming committee, and chaired the Queen Committee, and was a senior class officer. I also served on student government committees and wrote for and helped edit the Winonan. I was a member of Business Club, English Club, the Orientation Team, and named to Who’s Who. Campus student leaders have less time for study and work and need recognition for their talents and time. When I graduated and President Minne shook my hand, he said, “Thank you, Carol, for all you have done for Winona State.” This is my way to say, “Thank you, Winona State for all you did for me.”
