George Floyd Memorial Scholarship

In June, 2020, the George Floyd Memorial Scholarship was established with the Winona State University Foundation. This scholarship supports students of color with an interest in inclusion, diversity and equality.

Criteria
• Each recipient must be an undergraduate student enrolled full-time (minimum of 12 credits per semester Fall and Spring) and in good standing at Winona State University
• Each recipient may be classified as an incoming Freshman
• Each recipient must be from a Minneapolis area High School
• Preference will be given to students who self-identify as a Person of Color
• Each recipient must have financial need as determined by their FAFSA
• Each recipient must submit an essay demonstrating their interest in Inclusion, Diversity and Equality

Background and Motivation
Equity 2030 is a moral imperative, and an economic imperative for the state of Minnesota. The goal of Equity 2030 is to eliminate equity gaps in education. Financial resources and support for disadvantaged students is critical to the elimination of these graduation gaps (by race/ethnicity, socio-economic status, and first-generation).

The George Floyd Scholarship is not only in alignment with Equity 2030 state goals but is the core of the WSU mission. This scholarship will provide a lasting resource for WSU student and future Warriors who are dedicated and driven to pursue leaderships roles in their desired career field.

The mission of Winona State University is to enhance the intellectual, social, cultural, and economic vitality of the people and communities we serve. We will honor George Floyds legacy by continuing to educate and serve the next generation of diverse leaders to address injustice, systemic racism, and inequality and in its many forms.
