Lyle Papenfuss Basketball Scholarship

In February of 2021, the Lyle Papenfuss Basketball Scholarship was established with the Winona State University Foundation. The scholarship will benefit members of the Winona State Basketball Team.

Criteria
• Undergraduate/graduate-Incoming freshman are eligible
• Full time = 12 credits per semester (NCAA Requirement)
• Recipient must have a 3.0 GPA
• Must be a member of the WSU Basketball Team

Background and Motivation
Lyle “Slats” Papenfuss grew up in LaCrescent, MN and attended LaCrosse Central High School. He was an excellent athlete in both basketball and baseball, attaining national honorable mention All-American in basketball his senior year. “Slats” declined basketball scholarship offers from the University of Wisconsin and Marquette University in order to attend Winona State College to play both sports with his brother, Dick. They enjoyed three years of participation together in both sports. Lyle started in basketball all four years with All Conference honors and eventually being selected for the Winona State College Hall of Fame. They both enjoyed participating in three NAIA National Tournaments in Baseball. His greatest accomplishments, however, were off the court and diamond. Lyle was a devout Christian who lived by example for all who the pleasure of knowing him. These excellent character qualities helped him become a highly successful insurance agent/owner in Rochester and throughout the state of Minnesota. His positive reputation also enabled him to be selected to serve as a Board of Director for banks in Minnesota and Wisconsin.
