Curtiss Johnson & Carol Hint/Johnson Nursing Scholarship

In May, 2021, the Curtiss Johnson & Carol Hint/Johnson Nursing Scholarship was established with the Winona State University Foundation. The scholarship will benefit and encourage minority and/or documented disabled students who are majoring in Nursing.

Criteria
• Undergraduate/graduate
• Full time = 12 credits per semester
• Nursing Major
• Any Class Year
• Financial need
• 2.0 GPA minimum
• Preference to minority students
• Preference for students with a documented disability

Background and Motivation
Carol and Curt met at Winona, through a friend at Winona state They were married in 1972 and currently live in Rochester MN. Carol graduated in 1967, majored in sociology while minoring in Spanish. Curt graduated in 1968 majoring in Sociology and Psychology, minoring in History.

Curt’s dream was to be an elementary school teacher. At the time, mid 60’s, advisory committee weren’t receptive to accepting a blind person into the teaching program. Carol paid for her education by working at the Winona Hotel Coffeeshop and nursing homes. Curt paid for his education by working at Winona YMCA as a masseur.

Carol’s favorite memory from WSU, was meeting friends who she still keeps in contact with today. Curt became aware of leadership skills as a charter member of Alpha-Phi-Omega a service fraternity. Curt also arranged for Bridge lessons on campus, promised the instructor each student would pay one dollar, 60 students showed up for each hour session.

Carol worked in Telecommunications for 35 years. Curt worked in vocational rehabilitation for the State of Minnesota 30 years. Since retirement they have traveled to over 15 countries and wintered in AZ. Their hobbies include family, friends, reading, music and old movies. Curt loves playing cards and is active in Toastmasters and Lions.
