Marlys Youngck Education Scholarship
In October 2018, The Marlys Youngck Education Scholarship was established with the Winona State University Foundation. The scholarship will benefit and encourage students who are majoring in Education.
Criteria
1. Each recipient must be enrolled full-time and in good standing at Winona State University (minimum 12 credits per semester)
2. Each recipient must be must be an education major
3. Each recipient must be admitted into the Teacher Education Program at WSU
4. Each recipient must have a GPA of 3.0 (4.0 = A).
5. Each recipient must demonstrate financial need; however, financial need will not be based solely on FAFSA
Background and Motivation
Marlys Youngck has been an educator for over 50 years. She earned her Bachelor of Science in Elementary Ed/Library Science from Mankato State University in 1958 and taught at several elementary schools in southern Minnesota. In 1968, Marlys completed a Masters Degree in Elementary Ed and began her career as the Curriculum Laboratory Librarian at Winona State University, where she served until her retirement in 1993. In 1980 Marlys earned a Masters Degree in Library Science at Indiana University in Bloomington.
Marlys enjoyed working with college students. She was inspired by students who wanted to become teachers, and found their energy and enthusiasm contagious. Marlys hopes her scholarship will help students with the qualities and characteristics necessary to be a good teacher.
