Verlie Sather Scholarship
The Verlie Sather Scholarship is created for students majoring in the Elementary Education and/or Early Childhoold Education Program.
Criteria1. Each recipient must be an undergraduate student enrolled full-time (minimum 12 credit hours) at Winona State University.
2. Each recipient must be classified as a junior or senior and be in good standing at Winona State University with a minimum grade point average (g.p.a.) of 3.0 (4.0=A).
3. Each recipient must be a declared major in Winona State University’s elementary education and/or early childhood education program.
4. Each recipient must have been admitted to the Teacher Education Program.
5. Each recipient must have demonstrated ability in working with children.
Biography/Motivation
Verlie Sather was born and raised in Houston, Minnesota. She received her two-year diploma from Winona State University in 1926 and taught in Dover, Zumbro Falls, Caledonia and Blue Earth, Minnesota schools. After receiving her B.A. degree from WSU in 1942, she began teaching in the Winona Public Schools.
Graduate studies followed at Cornell University, University of Chicago, St. Cloud State University and the University of Florida-Gainesville. Ms. Sather earned her M.A. degree from the University of Minnesota.
She was a faculty member of the WSU Education Department from 1959 until she retired in 1974. She specialized in teaching of reading and language arts and supervising student teachers. She also started a reading practicum program for experienced teachers.
Since retiring, Ms. Sather has done volunteer work for Community Memorial Hospital, the American Red Cross, Home Delivered Meals, and Central Lutheran Church. She has also spent time teaching reading to immigrant families.
In 1989 Ms. Sather was named Pioneer Educator of Minnesota by the Retired Teachers Association of Minnesota.
