Charlie & Marlys Zane Education Scholarship

In December, 2017 the Charlie and Marlys Zane Education Scholarship was established as a one-time scholarship fund for the 2018/19 academic year, with the Winona State University Foundation. The scholarship will benefit and encourage students admitted into the Teacher Education Program.

1. Each recipient must be an undergraduate student enrolled full-time and in good standing at Winona State University (minimum of 12 credits per semester, Fall and Spring)
2. Each recipient must be admitted into the Teacher Education Program
3. Each recipient must be a junior
4. Each recipient must demonstrate financial need, but need should not be based solely on FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid)
5. Each recipient most demonstrate commitment and promise in the field of education
6. As part of the application process for this scholarship, the student must submit an essay describing the following:
a. Financial need
b. Explain why you believe you will be an excellent teacher

Background and Motivation
Charlie and Marlys graduated from Winona State in the early 1960’s. Charlie with a degree in business education and Marlys in elementary education. Charlie was a nine-time letter winner at WSU, participating in football, baseball and wrestling. Charlie was the beloved Student Union Director for many years, retiring in 1997 as Director Emeritus. Charlie and Marlys traveled the U.S. and abroad after retirement and were very active with the WSU Alumni office and the Retiree Center. Marlys would like to honor Charlie’s memory by awarding two scholarships
