Derek Harms Leadership Award
In August 2018, the Derek Harms Leadership Award was established with the Winona State University Foundation. The award (scholarship) will benefit and encourage students who are majoring in Recreational and Tourism.
The recipient of the Derek Harms Scholarship must be a full-time undergraduate student, majoring in Recreation, Tourism or Therapeutic and Recreation and in good standing (GPA of 3.0+) at WSU. The ideal candidate would be actively involved in collegiate or community organizations, and/or employed in the area.
Background and Motivation
The Derek Harms Leadership Award at Winona State is offered in honor of Derek Austin Harms, who majored in Recreation and Tourism—Commercial Tourism, and minored in Mass Communications. A WSU student from 2015-2018, Derek demonstrated leadership in all realms of his campus experience—from his academic achievements, to hosting a live music program on KQAL-fm, to volunteering for civic and community events.
An accomplished outdoorsman, Derek worked for the Outdoor Education & Recreation Center and led OERC excursions. In 2017, Derek studied abroad with the Pacific Challenge in Australia and New Zealand. He was also a member of WSU’s Ultimate Frisbee Team. Derek, who always celebrated his friends’ successes, would be proud to see a Winona classmate carry forward his enthusiasm for active, engaged learning.
