Biography/Motivation

Dr. Warren Haesly was Director of the Winona State University Student Health Service and campus physician from 1968 to 1986. He established this scholarship in his name shortly before his death on June 5, 1994 at age 69.
He was born September 14, 1924 in Winona and went to Carleton College and Berea College in Kentucky for a year each then graduated from Northwestern University Medical School in Chicago, Illinois in 1948. Warren had received the Prentiss-Bell Scholarship which had enabled him to attend college, so he established the Warren Haesly Scholarship so he could help others. He practiced medicine in Wykoff, Rushford and Winona, Minnesota, and was in private practice for 19 years prior to his tenure at Winona State.
Dr. Haesly served in the U.S. Navy V-12 Program for two and a half years, then was a Flight Surgeon in the U.S. Air Force for two years, being discharged as a Captain.
He was on the staff at Community Memorial Hospital and Health Officer for the City of Winona for 18 years. He was Medical Advisor to the American Red Cross, member of the Minnesota State Medical Association, past president of the Winona County Medical Society, and past president of the Winona Lions Club. Warren was on the Board of Trustees at the Watkins Home and the Board of Directors of the Community Concert Association. He was a charter member of the Brookside church of Christ where he taught Adult Bible Studies and was a song leader at the church.
