First-Gen Warrior Scholarship
The First-Gen Warrior Scholarship will support and encourage first generation students who have financial need so they are able to begin or continue their studies at WSU.
1. Each recipient must be an undergraduate student enrolled full-time in good standing at Winona State University (minimum of 12 credits per semester, fall and spring.)
2. Each recipient must be a first generation student (neither parent has a four-year degree.)
3. Each recipient must demonstrate financial need as determined by their FAFSA.
Through his work with the First-Gen Warriors, Charles Opatz, an Academic Advisor and Career Counselor at Winona State University, and his colleagues, have found that over 45% of Winona State University students fit the federal definition of first generation students (neither parent has attained a four-year degree). First-generation students have a lower graduation rate and a higher dropout rate than their peers whose parents have a four-year degree. Further, first-generation students come from low-income families who need financial help to pay their tuition, room, and board.
