Biography/Motivation

Barbara Schilling, a longtime Winona resident, passed away In October 2003, after living a long and full life. This in itself is not remarkable. What is remarkable is the legacy this person left behind. Unbeknownst to her many beneficiaries, Barbara Schilling left generous gifts to several individuals and organizations in the Winona area.
Barbara Schilling was born in 1919 in Rushford, Minnesota. She married Frederick G. Schilling in April 1950. Barbara was an active member of her church and she enjoyed traveling, needlework, music and children. A close friend of Barbara’s shared that Barbara truly loved children, especially young children. She is sure that the motivation for Barbara’s gift to the WSU Foundation was because education was so important to her. Barbara was caring and kind to everyone she met.
Barbara’s generous gift will be used to fund Opportunity Scholarships which will be awarded to many future Winona State students who, without this assistance would be unable to afford to attend college. Barbara’s caring and kindness will continue to impact the lives of others for a very long time!
