First-Gen Warrior Scholarship
Through his work with the First-Gen Warriors, Charles Opatz, an Academic Advisor and Career Counselor at Winona State University, and his colleagues, have found that over 45% of Winona State University students fit the federal definition of first generation students (neither parent has attained a four-year degree). First-generation students have a lower graduation rate and a higher dropout rate than their peers whose parents have a four-year degree. Further, first-generation students come from low-income families who need financial help to pay their tuition, room, and board.
