Frederick A. & Marie Jederman Scholarship

Frederick A. Jederman was born in Nebraska in 1891, the youngest of a large German immigrant family. He dropped out of high school to work in a local flour and grain mill where he saved enough money to return to high school and graduate in 1912. Shortly thereafter, he gained certification to teach in a rural school.

He graduated from Peru (Nebraska) State Normal School and earned both a Bachelor’s of Arts and a Masters of Arts degree from the University of Nebraska. Frederick served superintendent of a small school in Bellwood, Nebraska, and later become Superintendent of Schools in Atkinson, Nebraska.

During World War I, Frederick was drafted into the Army & shipped overseas where he said he had “a worm’s eye view of France.” After the war, he studied at the British Museum in London. He married Marie Maclntyre in 1920. They had one daughter, Jean Jederman.

In 1925, he began his career at Winona State Teachers College in the History & Political Science Department. Frederick was Dean of Men, chaired the social science department, was head of the scholarship committee and advisor to the Dynamo Club. Shortly after retiring as professor emeritus, he died of a heart attack in 1964.
