Joan Kangel Madland Memorial Scholarship

Joan Kangel Madland Memorial Scholarship

The Joan Kangel Madland Memorial Cheerleading Scholarship is in memory of Joan Kangel Madland; wife, mother, sister, teacher, and friend. Joan completed her undergraduate degree in Elementary Education in three years (1966) and her Master’s Degree (1971), both at WSU. She worked hard throughout school, not only academically, but also cheerleading for football and wrestling. Joan participated and excelled in all that she did.

Upon completion of her teaching degrees, Joan taught for 34 years in Wisconsin, Minnesota, and Pennsylvania. She taught all grade levels from first through eighth grade and was a Title I Teacher and Reading Specialist. Her diverse training allowed her to adapt to any school environment, even transitioning from a small town to an inner city school setting. Joan always believed in her students and taught them to be the best people they could be. She mentored many new teachers and always supported her colleagues.

Family, friends and faith were the most important parts of Joan’s life. She lit up a room with her beautiful, bright smile. She showed unconditional love and made everyone feel welcome. She made the right decisions in every situation. Whether it was teaching, traveling, golfing or relaxing at home, Joan enjoyed each moment and had a strong love of life.

Scholarship contacts are Wally Madland (husband of Joan), Anna Bender, Thomas Madland, and Mitchell Madland (children of Joan).
