Ted & Diane Fredrickson Scholarship

Ted & Diane Fredrickson are both Winona State University graduates. Ted received his degree in Business Education and Diane received her Elementary Education degree in 1967. A native of Northfield, Minn., Dr. Fredrickson retired in 2006 after serving as the President of Capital University in Columbia Ohio a position he held since 2001. He was previously the Dean of the Graduate School of Business, at the University of St. Thomas in Minneapolis Minnesota from 1995-2001.

Earlier in his career at St. Thomas, he held a variety of positions, including associate dean, director of the Division of Business and professor in the Division of Business. Under his guidance as director, the Division of Business experienced rapid growth, reaching a high of 2,400 business majors supported by 45 full-time and 22 part-time faculty. He held earlier teaching positions at Bishop’s University in Quebec, the University of Northern Colorado and at Waldorf College in Iowa, where he also served as Waldorf’s head baseball coach.

As dean of the Graduate School of Business at St. Thomas, Dr. Fredrickson oversaw an enrollment of more than 3,000 students, making it the third largest graduate business school in the United States. During his tenure as dean, the Graduate School of Business attracted more than $75 million in private contributions.

Dr. Fredrickson had responsibility for a wide range of centers and institutes at St. Thomas that provided seminars and consulting services to more than 21,000 participants per year. He also received the university’s Business Excellence Award.
Dr. Fredrickson also has extensive international experience and helped establish numerous agreements to facilitate student and faculty exchanges abroad at the University of St. Thomas. In 2001, he traveled to Perth, Australia, and Taipei, Taiwan, to solidify student and faculty exchanges with universities there. He also has helped establish similar exchange agreements with schools in England, Ireland, France, Uruguay, Cuba, Siberia, Greece, the People’s Republic of China, Japan and Canada. He also has taught classes in a variety of subjects, including western business practices and marketing, in China, Siberia, Uruguay and Canada.
Dr. Fredrickson holds a doctorate in management and a master’s degree in business education from the University of Northern Colorado. He earned his bachelor’s degree in business education from Winona State University in Minnesota. Winona State honored him in 1997 with its Distinguished Alumnus Award.

On Nov. 19, 2001, the Board of Trustees announced the selection of Dr. Theodore L. Fredrickson as the 14th president of Capital University. Fredrickson began his presidency on April 2, 2002.

Diane E. Fredrickson is a community volunteer and education. She is retired from Minnesota ISD 833 where she was a literacy specialist, reading recovery teacher and district literacy consultant. She has also been an instructor at the Reading Center at the University of St. Thomas as well as an elementary and Title 1 teacher in Iowa and Colorado.
Diane earned a B.S. in Elementary Education at Winona State University and an M.A. in Reading Education at the University of Northern Colorado.

Diane’s past board service in Ohio includes the Reading Recovery Council of North America, Columbus YWCA and King Arts Center. In Minnesota she has been on the Cottage Grove Parks and Recreation Commission and has been a Camp Fire Leader. She continues to be active at ALL Saints Lutheran Church where she has been involved with church council, education, scholarship and lay ministry. She is currently a Master Gardener who volunteers educating and advocating for gardening in Washington County.
Dr. Fredrickson and his wife, Diane, have two children, a son Eric and daughter Kristin, grandchildren Kate & Adam. In their spare time, Ted & Diane Fredrickson enjoy theater and music, as well as fishing and spectator sports, particularly ice hockey.
