Verlie Sather Scholarship

Verlie Sather was born and raised in Houston, Minnesota. She received her two-year diploma from Winona State University in 1926 and taught in Dover, Zumbro Falls, Caledonia and Blue Earth, Minnesota schools. After receiving her B.A. degree from WSU in 1942, she began teaching in the Winona Public Schools. Graduate studies followed at Cornell University, University of
Chicago, St. Cloud State University and the University of Florida-Gainesville. Ms. Sather earned her M.A. degree from the
University of Minnesota.

She was a faculty member of the WSU Education Department from 1959 until she retired in 1974. She specialized in the teaching of reading and language arts and supervising student teachers. She also started a reading practicum program for experienced
teachers. Since retiring, Ms. Sather has done volunteer work for Community Memorial Hospital, the American Red Cross, Home Delivered Meals, and Central Lutheran Church. She has also spent time teaching reading to immigrant families. In 1989, Ms. Sather was named Pioneer Educator of Minnesota by the Retired Teachers Association of Minnesota.
