June M. Braisted Scholarship

In 2012, The June Braisted Education Scholarship was created with the Winona State University Foundation from an irrevocable trust. This scholarship will benefit WSU students majoring in Education.

Criteria

1. Each recipient must be an undergraduate student enrolled full-time and in good standing at Winona State University. (minimum of 12 credits per semester, Fall and Spring)
2. Each recipient must be a declared Education major.
3. Each recipient must be a Junior or Senior.

Biography/Motivation

June M. Lerstad Braisted was born May 5, 1918 in Virginia, Minnesota. She attended school in Virginia through 2 years of junior college, then transferring to Winona State Teachers college now Winona State University where she received her teaching degree. She taught in Michigan and later in her home town of Virginia, Minnesota, for a total of 14 years before marrying her husband, Lloyd Braisted. In those days married women would not usually teach school.

She raised 2 sons to adulthood in Hope, North Dakota. She returned to teaching in Pillsbury, North Dakota, for part of one year. She quit due to health reasons. She moved to Valley City, North Dakota, after her husband passed away.

While in Valley City she was involved in church and Senior Center and did travel to 49 of the 50 states, missing Louisiana. She also visited the countries of Canada, Mexico, Denmark, Norway, Sweden, New Zealand, and Australia. She moved to Jamestown in 1999 to be closer to one of her sons and grandsons.

As of the writing in June 2015 she currently lives in a nursing home in Jamestown, North Dakota.
