Dr. Stanley A. Arbingast Scholarship

The Dr. Stanley A. Arbingast Scholarship is for undergraduate students who are enrolled full-time at Winona State University.

Criteria

1. Each recipient must be an undergraduate student enrolled full-time at Winona State University.
2. Each recipient must be classified as a new-entering student (either a freshman or a transfer from another post-secondary institution) who meets the University’s admissions standards.
3. In the case, of new entering freshmen, each recipient must have a high school GPA of 3.3 or higher to be considered for this award.
4. In the case of entering transfer students, each recipient must have a grade point average of at least 3.35 on a 4.0 scale and have completed a minimum of 70 post-secondary credits by April 1 prior to enrollment at WSU.
5. Preference should be given to students who: A) matriculate from one of the following counties in Minnesota: Mower, Freeborn, Steele, or Waseca; and, B) who intend to select a major from the College of Education, College of Business or College of Liberal Arts.

Biography/Motivation

DR. STANLEY A. ARBINGAST
- Stanley Arbingast was graduated from Austin, Minnesota, High School and is professor emeritus at the University of Texas in Austin, Texas. The distance between the two traverses more than 50 years and a thousand miles.
Dr. Arbingast was graduated from Winona State University in 1929 with a two-year teaching certificate and became a teacher and principal at Lewisville, Minnesota, Elementary School for four years. He returned to Winona State to complete a bachelor’s degree, earning these honors in 1934.
He returned to teaching, this time in Lewiston, Minnesota, Public Schools until 1938. He taught special education, history and debate in schools in Duluth, Minnesota, from 1938 until 1947, except for a break to serve in the U.S. Air Force during World War II.
He then enrolled at the University of Washington in Seattle, where he received a master’s degree in 1947 and his Ph.D. in 1956.
From 1949 until 1981, he served the University of Texas as a professor of marketing and geography, in addition to directing operations for the Bureau of Business Research. While at the University of Texas he co-authored many magazine articles about the economy of Texas and the United States. He is also co-author of the Atlas of Texas, the Atlas of Mexico, and the Atlas of Central America. He is also the editor of the Texas Business Review. His professional affiliations include Southwestern Social Science Association (past president) , Association of Bureaus of Business and Economic Research (past president), International Travel Research Association (board member), Texas Chapter of International Travel Research Association (past president), American Association of Collegiate Schools of Business, and the Southwest Division of the American Association of Geographers (past chairman)
Dr. Arbingast in 1988 was honored by the Winona State University Alumni Society, which presented him with a Distinguished Alumnus Award. He has also received many other awards and honors, including: Distinguished Service Award from the Association of Bureaus of Business and Economic Research, awards for Teaching Excellence from the University of Texas Student Association, College of Business Administration Student Council, and from The Eyes of Texas’ student honorary. He has been named Honorary Texas Cowboy by the Texas Cowboys, a service organization of male students, and is an Honorary Admiral in the Texas Navy, appointed by the Governor of Texas for serving on many advisory committees to several divisions of state government. He is a generous supporter of Winona State University programs and activities through many anonymous gifts to the WSU Foundation.
