Biography/Motivation

In recognition of the influence that Winona State University has had upon the lives of their family over three generations, WSU alumni Jim and Claran Ramsdell have chosen to establish a scholarship within the WSU Foundation. Claran worked for many years as a special education teacher. Jim was a member of Winona State’s first Rhythm Masters Jazz Band in 1947, a graduate of the Navy School of music, and a music education teacher. He later entered the field of school administration where he went on to become a school superintendent for over 32 years. This scholarship will recognize Music majors or Jazz Studies minors in their junior or senior years, with preference given to members of the Jazz Ensemble/Combo. It is hoped that the Jim and Claran Ramsdell Music Scholarship will benefit future generations of scholars in the Winona State University tradition.
