William E. Green Biology Scholarship

The William E. Green Scholarship Fund will assist aspiring biologists to make the environment a better place for future generations.

Criteria

Each applicant must be an undergraduate student enrolled full-time (minimum of 12 credits each semester) in good standing at Winona State University
Each applicant must declare a major in Biology
Preference will be given to Biology majors pursuing Ecology
Each applicant must be classified as Junior or Senior when receiving the award
Each applicant must maintain a minimum G.P.A. of 2.75 (4.0=A)
It is a preference that each applicant have financial need as determined by their FAFSA

Biography/Motivation

William E. Bill Green obtained a B. S. in entomology from Colorado State University where he was honor man in his division. He subsequently received a M.S. in 1937 and a Ph.D. in 1948 in economic zoology (wildlife management) from Iowa State University. In 1938 he became a regional game manager for the Game, Fish, and Oyster Commission, working in the Gulf Coast and Rio Grande Valley. He joined the staff of the Upper Mississippi River Wildlife and Fish Refuge in 1940. He subsequently became an area wildlife management biologist with the Division of Refuges, U.S. Department of Interior. In that capacity, he worked on refuge and water-fowl management in over 20 states and on several national problems. In 1965, he organized the first Refuge Manager Training School and was director of the School through 1969. He retired in 1975 and received the Department Meritorious Service Award. He served as a malaria control officer in the U.S. Navy in the Pacific Theater in World War II. During retirement he enjoyed traveling the world, working with the amateur radio, and being involved in several Masonic Lodge activities.

Bill loved the environment and the many creatures that lived within. He absolutely believed that humans and the creatures must live in harmony with each other. Throughout his career he emphasized the importance of the need for top quality biologists and worked with many aspiring biologists when they served as interns with him. He always stressed the importance of biology as part of the curriculum at Winona State University and wanted to establish a scholarship for future biologists.
