Biography/Motivation
In 2007, Paul Haake established the Howard Doc Daniels Memorial Scholarship as an endowed fund in the Winona State University Foundation.
Born in Winona, Minnesota, Howard Daniels devoted his life to physical education in his hometown. He graduated from Winona High School where he was active in athletics. After degrees from Winona State University and George Williams College, he returned to
Winona and spent many years as the physical education director at the Winona YMCA. In addition he was highly visible as a referee at sporting events and as the host at YMCA demonstrations of gymnastics and other physical education activities. Many learned to swim under his tutelage. He had a profound effect on many boys and adolescent young men by his teaching, his programs in physical fitness and his excellent summer camp activities. When the local YMCA burned, he found ways to continue activities by using the YWCA and other buildings. He died suddenly and unexpectedly of a heart attack. The scholarship in his memory will be awarded to a Winona State University student who is active in teaching physical fitness in local communities.
“Howard was the type of person you wanted to grow up to be and emulate. Howard was a fabulous person who cared so much about children. Howard was definitely inspiration to all of us young ones. Howard was a role model and he was also a rarity when it comes to special people in my life.”
