Thomas Taylor Endowed Scholarship for Environmental Science
In November 2022, the Thomas Taylor Endowed Scholarship for Environmental Science was established with the Winona State University Foundation. The scholarship will benefit and encourage students who are majoring in Environmental Science.

- Undergraduate student enrolled full-time (minimum of 12 credits per semester)
- Declared major in Environmental Science
- Financial need
- GPA of 3.0 or higher
Background and Motivation
Tom holds a bachelor’s degree in geology from Winona State University, graduating in 1977. He received a Master’s degree (igneous petrology, 1979) and a Ph.D. (carbonate geochemistry, 1982) from Michigan State University. Tom joined Shell’s Research Center in Houston in I982. His work focused on research and applications related to reservoir quality, diagenesis, and petrophysical rock properties. Following his retirement from Shell in 2012, he developed and taught an in-depth, comprehensive industry and academic training course (Quantitative Petrographic Analysis of Sandstones). He has recently published a textbook entitled Sandstone Petrography, Petrology, and Modeling (SEPM, 2022).
