*Background and Motivation *
Rodney J. Lingenfelter graduated from Winona State Teachers College (now Winona State University) in 1953, majoring in Mathematics and Physical Education with a minor in Biology. A member of one of the first graduate program cohorts, he received his M.S. in Education in 1956. Rod taught Math for 35 years, primarily in Bloomington, MN. He loved teaching and “never had a bad day, just a few challenging ones”. Each day he walked into a classroom full of students, not knowing what to expect, was exciting.

In sports, basketball was Rod’s specialty. He played from high school through post-college, including four fun years for the Warriors. He was also a Warrior football player. After coaching basketball for one year at WSU, he went on to coach high school basketball, football, track, and cross country.

“WSU is a great college that provided me with an education to enjoy a lifetime of teaching mathematics and being involved with sports, especially basketball. Financing an education is a challenge. I now have the opportunity to help with scholarships for students in need of financing to pursue a career in teaching mathematics and also one to help recruit talented basketball players for the Warriors.”
