Norbert & Jean Doré Mills Education Scholarship

In September 2018, The Norbert & Jean Dore Mills Education Scholarship was established with the Winona State University Foundation. The scholarship will benefit and encourage students who are majoring in Education who plan to teach secondary education.

Criteria
1. Each recipient must be enrolled full-time and in good standing at Winona State University (minimum 12 credits per semester)
2. Each recipient must be an education major specializing in secondary education
3. Each recipient must be admitted into the Teacher Education Program at WSU
4. Each recipient must have a GPA of 3.0 or higher (4.0=A)
5. Each recipient must demonstrate financial need; however, financial need will not be based solely on FAFSA

Background and Motivation
Norb and Jean both spent over 40 years in the education field. Norb received his undergraduate degree in Speech/Theatre from WSU and his MA and PhD in Communication from Bowling Green State University in Ohio. His teaching spanned junior and senior high schools in Minnesota, WSU (4 years including debate coach), and 31 years at the University of Toledo in the Department of Communication, teaching an assortment of classes, coaching their nationally ranked speech team, and serving as Associate Chair and Department Chair for many years. In 2005, he retired as Professor Emeritus.

Jean received her BA in Spanish from the College of St. Teresa and her MS in Educational Psychology from WSU. She was credentialed in Spanish, French, counseling, reading and Learning Disabilities and Behavior Disorders. She is also a registered nurse. For 35 years she was in the Special Education Department at Maumee High School in Ohio where she also served as its chair. She was a mentor to many teachers, presenter for the State Department of Education and chaired many area North Central Accreditation Committees. She retired in 2007.

Both Norb and Jean have a long history of performance in community theatres in Ohio and Minnesota and incorporated their experiences in their classroom activities.
