Dorothy McLaughlin Memorial Scholarship

The Dorothy C. McLaughlin Memorial Scholarship to benefit non-traditional students who are returning to school to be an elementary education teacher. The recipient of this scholarship should be an Elementary Education student with strong potential for success who is pursuing completion of his or her first college degree and is 35 years of age or older at the time of application.

Criteria

Each recipient must be an undergraduate student enrolled full-time (minimum of 12 credits per semester for Fall and Spring) and in good standing at Winona State University
Each recipient must be a declared Education major
Each recipient must be a non-traditional student (preferred age 35+) seeking their first college degree
Each recipient can be classified as a sophomore, junior, or senior
Each recipient must maintain a minimum GPA of 3.0
Each recipient must have financial need as determined by their FAFSA through Financial Aid

Biography/Motivation

The Dorothy C. McLaughlin Memorial Scholarship was established by her children in recognition of the challenges experienced by non-traditional students returning to school at a later age. Dorothy McLaughlin was one such student who returned to Winona State University in 1961 at the age of 41 to complete her Bachelor degree in Elementary Education while still working and raising two children. She graduated with high honors in 1965 and subsequently completed her Master’s degree in Library Sciences in 1969. She then served as librarian for the Winona Junior High School from 1969 to 1985. The recipient of this scholarship should be an Elementary Education student with strong potential for success who is pursuing completion of his or her first college degree and is 35 years of age or older at the time of application.
