Augusta Nelson Foreign Language Memorial Scholarship
The Augusta Nelson Foreign Language Memorial Scholarship is created to encourage and support students studying Foreign Language. Recipients must maintain a GPA of 3.25.
Criteria
1. Each recipient must be an undergraduate student enrolled full-time at Winona State University enrolled in at least 12 credits per semester
2. Each first-time recipient must be classified as a:
A) Sophomore, Junior or Senior and be in good standing at Winona State University with a minimum grade point average 3.25 (g.p.a. 4.0 =A)
3. Recipients must maintain a g.p.a. of 3.25
4. Recipients must be a declared Foreign Language major/minor
Biography/Motivation
Augusta was born July 6, 1908, in Manila, Philippine Islands, to Colonel Robert Stuart Kent Nelson and Edith ills Nelson, U.S. Army Medical Corps.
She earned her BA, MA, and PhD degrees at the University of Minnesota with majors in Romance Languages and English. Her additional study included summers at the Sorbonne, sabbatical and travels in England, West Germany, Italy, France, and Spain.
Dr. Nelson taught at the Colleges of St. Scholastica and St. Teresa and the Universities of Minnesota, Nebraska, Oregon and Winona State. She came to Winona in 1944 and was a member of the WSU faculty from 1947 through the summer of 1975 when she retired and became a member of the emeritus faculty.
Augusta’s cultural and civic activities include chairmanship of the Tri-college Concerts and Lectures Committee, 1966-1976; reviews of numerous concerts and plays; American Association of University Women board membership; and chair of the Winona Human Rights Commission. She received formal recognition for her years of service and leadership in AAUW and the Human Rights Commission.
