Dr. Joseph H. Foegen Scholarship

The Dr. Joseph H. Foegen Scholarship is for students who have declared a major in WSU’s Business Administration – General or Human Resources Program, with priority given to Human Resources.

Criteria

1. Each recipient must be an undergraduate student enrolled full-time (minimum 12 credit hours) at Winona State University.
2. Each recipient must be classified as a junior or senior and be in good standing at Winona State University with a minimum grade point average (GPA.) of 3.50 (4.0 = A).
3. Each recipient must be a declared major in Winona State University’s Business Administration – General, or Human Resources Program with priority given to Human Resources.
4. Each recipient must demonstrate superior writing ability evidenced by an original essay of 500 words minimum on a subject that is obviously business-related, (i.e., The Relationship Between Ethics and Business, Management: Well Worth a Working Lifetime).

Biography/Motivation

Joseph H. Foegen was born and raised in Kaukauna, Wisconsin (one of the Fox Cities, approximately 25 miles south of Green Bay and 10 miles north of Appleton), where he attended Holy Cross Elementary School. He graduated from Kaukauna High School where he was valedictorian of his class. While in school, he received the Reader’s Digest and Otto Kowalke awards.

Dr. Foegen attended the University of Wisconsin, Madison, where he earned his BBA in 1954, MBA in 1955, and Ph.D. in 1959 in industrial relations, personnel, and sociology. While at Madison, he was a member of Phi Beta Kappa, Phi Kappa Phi, and Beta Gamma Gamma Sigma” honorary fraternities and Phi Kappa” social fraternity, and he received a Ford Foundation Dissertation Fellowship.
His employment history included serving as a substitute mail carrier for the U.S. Post Office in Kaukauna and working for in the paper-sample service to and sales department for the Thilmany Pulp & Paper Company (subsequently Hammermill, now International) in Kaukauna.

He served in the U.S. Any from April 1946 to April 1947. Basic training was at Camp (now Fort) Polk, Louisiana. He attended the Signal Corps School at Fort Monmouth, New Jersey, and was later stationed with the 4025th Signal Service Group, in Manila, Philippines.
Coming to Winona State University in 1958, Dr. Foegen has shared ideas with three generations of students, mostly in management and human resources classes. He also taught courses over the years in economics, marketing, money and banking, writing, and Business and the Future. Professional organization membership includes the Academy of Management, Industrial Relations Research Association, Society for Business Ethics, and World Future Society.

From 1979 to the present, Dr. Foegen has been editor of Business Brevities, a publication of the WSU College of Business. As of June 1996, he has had 408 articles published in a wide range of both professional and more- general journals. Dr. Foegen is married to Mary Kay Christoph-Foegen, a native of Madison, Wisconsin, and they have two daughters: Margaret Foegen-Karsten, a tenured faculty member of the University of Wisconsin, Platteville, and Julie Foegen-Frederick, copy editor of the Duluth (MW) News Tribune. He and Mary have four grandchildren.
