Background and Motivation
Gayle was born on a farm in rural Winona and grew up believing that one must work hard to realize their dreams. She is keenly aware of how difficult it is for WSU students to balance school life with life’s expenses because she struggled with these same issues as she worked to attain her teacher’s degree and master’s degree. Gayle retired from teaching elementary school after 36 years and has expressed a desire to help and encourage others who are pursuing this rewarding career.
Focused and motivated, Gayle overcame numerous hardships to become a successful businesswoman and turning her life-long dream into a reality. She built and managed Big Valley Ranch, Inc. into a notable horseback riding academy. A ranch that has hosted many local and national horse shows, and continues to introduce many young people to equestrian activities. The ranch where she still resides today.
Gayle continues to give back to the community she so dearly loves. She is a strong animal advocate and conservationist. She both supports or remains active in American Association of University Women (AAUW), NEA-Retired, Retired Educators Association of MN (REAM), S.E.Retired Educators Association of MN (SEREAM), Winona Area Retired Educators Association (WAREA), Learning Club, Minnesota City Historical Association, Minnesota Marine Art Museum (MMAM), Polish Cultural Institute and Museum, Winona County Historical Society, Sons of Norway, Girl Scout Council of River Trails, Harvest House, Land Stewardship Project, Minnesota Horse Council, Ranch Riders, Senior Friendship Center, Winona Bird Club, Winona Humane Society, Young at Heart, and Senior Friendship Center.
This scholarship is being given in Gayle’s name by her siblings who have always looked up to her, asked for her advice, and are so proud to call her our sister.
