Background and Motivation
Richard “Dick” Schneider CPA, was an accounting professor at Winona State University from 1974-2007. He served as the chair of the accounting department for many years, and retired as Professor Emeritus in 2007. He particularly enjoyed teaching tax accounting and tax preparation in his private practice. Dick was motivated to help others by sharing his talents, volunteering to prepare taxes for those in need. He had a fondness for the Volunteer Tax Assistance Program, where he served as coordinator for many year, both on campus, and later in the greater Winona community. The Winona flood of 2007 caused a great need and Dick was there to help. His generous use of his talents during this challenging time was a hallmark of his life. Teaching was an important part of who he was.
Dick and Mary (Heidemann) Schneider were married in July of 1967. During their nearly 50 years together, they raised four children: Wendy, Matthew, William and Peter. Dick passed away in the spring of 2017. His family established the Richard Schneider Memorial Scholarship in accounting to honor Dick’s memory and continue his legacy of making a difference in the lives of others.
