Lorraine N. Cieminski Non-Traditional Student Scholarship
Criteria:
- Non-Traditional (24+ years) Undergraduate female student from any major
- Enrolled in 12 or more credits for both fall and spring terms
- GPA of 2.5 or higher
Background and Motivation
Lorraine was a lifelong resident of Winona, MN. She married young and dropped out of high school, later completing her GED while working full time and raising six- children. She attended Winona State University as a non-traditional student in the late 1960’s, early 1970’s, majoring in Business Administration. At the time, non-traditional married female college students were unheard of. In 1976, Lorraine became the first woman to hold political office in Winona as a County Commissioner. She successfully sold insurance and operated a bookkeeping service. She did not complete her degree at
Winona State, opting to use the funds to send her now grown children to college. Cathleen Jo Faruque, a professor emeritus from the Department of Social Work developed this scholarship in memory of her mother, Lorraine, for non traditional women (aged 24 years and older) with children attending Winona State University,
