Judy J. Whetstone Elementary Education

The purpose of this scholarship is to encourage and support undergraduate students who have declared and been admitted to pursue a degree in elementary education at WSU. You must be a Junior or Senior with a minimum G.P.A. of 2.5.

Criteria

1. Each recipient must be an undergraduate student enrolled fulltime (i.e., minimum of twelve credits per semester) at Winona State University.
2. Each recipient must be classified as a second year (award for third year) or third year (award for fourth year).
3. Each recipient must be a declared major in B.S. Elementary Education and be admitted into the program based on written program admission standards, if available.
4. The recipient must be in good standing at Winona State University and possess a minimum grade point average (G.P.A.) of 2.5 (A=4.0) in B.S. Elementary Education coursework and a minimum of 2.5 G.P.A. overall.
5. The recipient may have financial need.

Biography/Motivation

Judy was born on July 14, 1937 in Winona, MN to Russell and Arvilla (Ottum) Herbert.

She married Gerald Jerry Whetstone on July 27, 1957 at Central Lutheran Church in Winona, MN. She taught for 28 years at Central Elementary School teaching 1st grade and retiring in 2002. Judy was a lifelong area resident. She enjoyed going to her beach house in Florida and playing as much tennis as possible.

Judy is a member of Central Lutheran Church, Winona Area Retired Teachers Association, and Winona Tennis Association. Judy enjoyed playing tennis, biking, attending her flowers and yard. She was very gracious and giving towards others. Judy was a pioneer for the Grandparent Program, affiliated with pen pals program, and always kept in touch with her students throughout their lives. She loved her granddaughters and all of her former students.

Judys students will remember her for magical shoes and outfits. Her singsong rules and sparkly pretty appearance. Every child that Judy touched was treated with compassion and kindness. It was very important to Judy that every student was ready for second grade, academically and socially!

She is survived by her loving husband of
53 years, Jerry, Winona, MN; her children: Jay Whetstone (Sharon Tweten), Houston & Winona, MN and Joy Mason (Dan Mrkvicka), Winona, MN. Her two granddaughters: Jamie and Ashley Mason
