Luther & Mildred McCown Memorial Scholarship
The Luther and Mildred McCown Memorial Scholarship is created for students majoring in WSU’s Health, Exercise, and Rehabilitative Sciences.
Qualifications of Recipients
1. Each recipient must be an undergraduate student enrolled full-time (minimum 12 credit hours) at Winona State University.
2. Each recipient must be classified as a sophomore, junior, senior, and be in good standing at Winona State University with a minimum grade point average (G.P.A.) of 3.0 (4.0 = A).
3. Each recipient must be a declared major in WSU’s HERS program.
Selection Process and Criteria
1. Final selection of the awardee shall be made by a faculty committee within the HERS department.
2. The criteria used in selecting a scholarship recipient will be in order of importance the student’s:
A. Financial need;
B. ability and promise in the field of HERS
C. and academic record.
3. the award is to be made only if there is a qualified candidate.
Biography/Motivation
The Scholarship Fund was established at Winona State University in 1976 as a result of gifts made by the McCown family and friends following the death of Dr. Luther A. McCown. He received his B.S. Degree from WSU in 1936 and his M.S. Degree from Colorado State University, Greeley, Colorado in 1942. He joined the WSU faculty the sane year. He received his Ph.D. Degree at Washington State University, Pullman, Washington. As a student, Dr. McCown was a fine scholar and athlete. As a staff member in the Department of Health and Physical Education, he was a highly respected teacher and coach. “Mac” retired in 1973 after serving for several years as department head in Health and Physical Education and after many years of distinguished service to the university.
