Jeanette & Arnold Bergler Scholarship

The Jeanette & Arnold Bergler Scholarship is for undergraduate junior or senior students enrolled full-time at Winona State University. Students must be a declared major in Winona State University’s Elementary Education program and have been admitted to the Teacher Education Program. Preference is to be given to any Elementary Education major who has taken art or music classes beyond those required.

Criteria

1. Each recipient must be an undergraduate student enrolled full-time (minimum 12 credit hours) at Winona State University.
2. Each recipient must be classified as a junior or senior and be in good standing at Winona State University with a minimum grade point average (g.p.a.) of 3.5 (4.0 = A).
3. Each recipient must be a declared major in Winona State University’s Elementary Education Program. Preference is to be given to an elementary education major who has taken art or music classes beyond those required.
4. Each recipient must have been admitted to the Teacher Education Program.

Biography/Motivation

Arnie and Jeanette Bergler were both born and raised in the Winona area. Jeanette graduated from Winona State Teachers College with three degrees. She received her diploma in 1952, earned her B.S. degree in 1957 and her M.S. degree in 1964. She did graduate work at the University of Minnesota where she earned her Education Specialist.
Jeanette started her teaching career at Spring Grove, Minnesota, where she taught sixth grade for four years. She then taught in the Rochester Public School System where she retired after 35 years. During that time she served as a Sixth Grade Teacher for 13 years, Elementary Art Specialist for 19 years and Elementary Art Curriculum writer for three years.
Her hobbies include drawing, acrylic/oil painting, rosemaling, gardening, and music. Her paintings and drawings are in many private homes as well as the Rochester Home Federal Savings and Loan Bank. She has also served as a church organist and a community volunteer for many years. Jeanette is a member of SEMVA (Southeastern Minnesota Visual Artists). Her involvement in professional organizations includes Rochester Retired Teachers Association (held offices at the local, regional and state levels) and Alpha Delta Kappa (honorary teachers) Sorority (held offices at the local and state levels)
Arnie worked as a building contractor in the Rochester area for 35 years specializing in home and commercial construction. He was also involved in land development and was a member of the Rochester Home Builders Association. Arnie is an avid woodcarver with membership in the Rochester Woodcarvers Association and an accomplished cabinetmaker. He also enjoys gardening, hunting, fishing and has also served as a volunteer in the Rochester community. Arnie is also a member of SEMVA. Jeanette and Arnie love to travel and have made trips to Europe (several times), India, Mexico, Turkey, Thailand, Soviet Union, Alaska, Hawaii, China, Central and South America, Africa (Egypt and Morocco), the Middle East (Holy Land), Australia and New Zealand.
