Shields Family Scholarship
In July 2017, Shields Family Scholarship in Physics was established at Winona State University Foundation to encourage and support students majoring in physics or students who plan to teach physics.
Criteria
1. Each recipient must be an undergraduate student enrolled full-time at Winona State University (minimum of 12 credits per semester, Fall and Spring)
2. Each recipient must be:
a. In a major offered by the WSU Department of Physics OR
b. Majoring in physical science with a goal of teaching physics
3. Award recipients can be a sophomore, junior or senior
4. Each recipient must have successfully completed Physics 221 or equivalent before applying and have an overall GPA of 3.0
Background and Motivation
Richard Shields was a professor of physics for over 40 years at Winona State University. His wife Barbara was an instructor of physics for over 20 years. His daughter Brooke was a graduate of the WSU chemistry program and is now a professor at Gusdtavus Adolphus College in St. Peter MN. His son Gary is a graduate of WSU Physics program and teaches physics at WSU. His daughter Amanda is a graduate of WSU Geology program and is the laboratory director at MaltEuro in Winona. The Shields Family strongly believe in the principles demonstrated by WSU and would like to help future physics students succeed in their careers and their life.
